The Light of the Neighboring Star
The second essay wrote that everyone is a variable star. Then a last question remains. How do beings that each shine on their own bear one another?
Between coherent lights there is no neutrality. People relate to that light one way or another. Love, envy, hatred: all of them are bearings taken with that light as the origin. Just as a moth that turns its back still has the angle of its back set by the light, even hatred is a confession of what is bright. Whether to relate is not a choice; only how to relate is.
One objection comes in. Are there not lights that stand close together and remain indifferent to each other? There are. But indifference is not neutrality. Neutrality is a balance within a relation; indifference is before one. Waves interfere only when they are coherent. Two lights whose wavelengths do not overlap, or which share no common reference, make no pattern however close they stand; they simply add. Neither reinforcing nor canceling, they sit side by side. Indifference is not a fourth response but the zero point of the three, a state that has no phase yet. And that zero point is not stable. Coherence is made by arrangement. Two lights that sat in adjacent seats for years, indifferent, are assigned to the same task, and on that day the wavelengths overlap, a reference appears, and indifference becomes a response. The phases lock. This is why the sentence that relating is not a choice is true. From the moment of coherence, neutrality drops out of the options, and whether coherence comes is mostly decided by arrangement.
The how comes in three kinds.
Basking. Receiving the light beside you as material for your own photosynthesis. By the discriminant of the first essay, this is input for as long as your own leaves are working; once the leaves begin to wither, it is no longer basking but the dodder’s registration. It is a response available when the light lies outside the territory of your identity, or when you are stable at the time.
Contending. Being burned because that light falls within your territory. Comparison and imitation. Generative when it turns into effort; corrosive when it settles into envy.
Extinguishing. Trying to remove the light itself when you can neither bask nor contend. Stigma, backlash, breaking.
The three are not parallel options but a single slope. Three variables decide which path you slide down. Is that light within my territory? Does it look reachable? Am I stable right now? Psychology has already sorted out the first two. Tesser’s self-evaluation maintenance model showed that another’s achievement becomes reflected glory when it lies outside the domain by which I define myself, and a wound of comparison when it lies inside; Girard showed that imitation and rivalry are two outputs of one engine, and the escalation by which a model slides into a rival and a rival into an obstacle. Jealousy and copying someone come from the same circuit.
No observer is exempt from this typology. To bask before the signal of one’s own kind, to suppress the spark of contention before a light in one’s own territory, to feel the urge to grade. The urge to grade is a low-dose form of extinguishing. Only with this confession does the typology become an anatomy rather than a stigma.
The ethics are short. Envy is not a sin but information. A rival is a map of my desire. Maturity is the discipline of converting the urges to contend and to extinguish into basking or effort, and a community that solves its problems by putting out lights goes dark.
The Physics of Interference
The interference of light was first seen in water. In the book Thomas Young published in 1807 from his lectures at the Royal Institution, he drew an apparatus: a lamp placed beneath a glass-bottomed tank, throwing the shadows of ripples onto a screen. For the interference of two sources, he wrote, throw two stones of equal size into a pond at the same time. Where the spreading circles overlap, bright and dark bands stand. His argument was that if light is a wave, it must undergo the effects already examined in water and in sound. A small flame, shining through water, proved what light is. So the ripples in this essay are not a stand-in for light but light’s original.
Light does not collide. It interferes.
The mechanics at the point where two waves meet are as follows. First, passage. Waves pass through each other, and after passing, each goes on as if the other had never been there. Interference happens only in the region of overlap, and there is no permanent exchange. Two ripples that meet do not take away each other’s height. Nothing is consumed and nothing is taken. This is what Jefferson wrote when he explained the nature of ideas by a candle: he who lights his taper at mine receives light without darkening me. The accounting of light is that basking does not diminish it.
Second, redistribution. That it does not diminish does not mean it always adds. Where the phases agree, the two become brighter than their sum; where they disagree, the result is zero. But the energy at the canceled spot has not vanished; it has moved to the reinforced spot, so that the average over the whole pattern is exactly the sum of the two. Interference adds no light to the universe. It only decides where the light will be.
These two articles revise the definition of mutual flourishing. Flourishing together is not a gain in total but a gain in distribution. Two stars aligning do not increase the light in the sky. What changes is where that light goes. The same two sources, depending on their arrangement, amplify each other or erase each other. Therefore flourishing together is, before it is a matter of character, a technique of phase alignment.
There is one limit. Superposition is a law of the linear regime. When amplitude is excessive, linearity breaks and the wave breaks. The safety rider of the second essay holds here too.
Three Techniques of Phase Alignment
First, looking in the same direction. Mimetic rivalry arises when two people want the same finite object. It is a problem of rival goods. But if what both want is the absolute, there is nothing to take, because the absolute is a non-rival good. Sharing a phototropism toward the absolute is the antidote to horizontal rivalry. The original theorem of the first essay is recovered here. Heliotropism is a vertical law and, at the same time, an antidote to envy. When Saint-Exupéry wrote that love is not gazing at each other but looking together in the same direction, what he set down was this alignment. At the head of the same sentence, he named that direction a common goal that lies outside ourselves.
The wave equation confirms his sentence twice. Once by the phased array. When several sources align their phases, a beam stands in a particular direction, and its intensity in that direction is the square of the number of sources. Ten aligned lights produce not ten times but a hundred times the beam. Only in that direction, though. Stars that look in the same direction are, toward that direction, brighter than the sum of their separate luminosities. Under the law that interference adds no light, the one place where exceeding the sum is permitted is the shared direction. And once by the standing wave. Two waves of equal amplitude traveling toward each other go nowhere. They become a standing wave that sloshes in place, and nodes appear that are forever still. Two waves that only face each other cannot travel. Only coherent waves moving in the same direction travel and reinforce.
Second, the exchange of standard candles. Using each other’s light not as material for measuring height but as a standard for measuring distance. With the other’s period, you measure a distance you could not measure alone, and with your period, the other measures a distance they could not. A relationship in which resistance is a gift is the field case. Two people who go at each other with full force on the mat of a training hall grow by pushing off each other’s resistance. The hand that holds firm, not the hand that goes easy, is the teacher. Kin meet because their territories overlap. Try to dissolve the overlap and the relationship goes flat; convert the overlap into an exchange of standards and the relationship becomes a training hall. The mechanics are passage. The measuring happens in the region where the two waves overlap, and after they pass, each remains itself. To measure by the other without changing the other. The condition of exchange is not fusion but passage.
Third, taking turns through the dark. Two variable stars with mismatched periods do not leave the sky dark. When one sets, the other is bright. The mechanics are beats. Two waves of exactly equal period and opposite phase are locked in permanent cancellation, but if the periods differ even slightly, their sum cannot stay at zero. Difference guarantees alternation. Article three of the second essay, that luminosities differ and all of them vary, returns here as a proof. A rival reads the other’s dark as an opportunity; a companion reads it as a watch. The criterion of the second essay becomes a technique here. The companion of the dark is not only someone to find but someone to be. Only, the watch is not kept on the condition of return. There are darks that do not come back, and beside them the light to take over the watch never arrives. If a watch is kept even so, it is not the alternation of light but the work of a different wiring, and the presence that the second essay sent outside the sky’s accounting gets its wiring in the clause below.
An underground clause attaches. Phase alignment is not only the sky’s business, and the value of presence is not fully computed by the sky’s accounting. The trees of a forest can be linked by underground fungal networks, and transfers of nutrients between them have been observed. That picture has been romanticized to the point of controversy, but the observation that resources move between roots stands; whether the path is the fungal network remains unsettled. Nourishment between people, too, flows underground rather than through the sky. Not worship but a trade of roots. Not dazzling, quiet, mutual, and reachable. And when two mature trees join as one, the join is not a fusion of whole trunks but a partial graft at the site of a wound. The bark of both must be pressed together in the same place for a long time before the cambium layers touch. A few points of union, and separate crowns. Complete fusion is not the perfected form of love but mutual shading.
The Altitude Theorem
The altitude of the absolute decides the peace of the horizontal.
For someone whose anchor is set at the height of God, no human being can threaten the seat of the sun. Light-gathering without rivalry is therefore possible. Someone whose absolute hangs low, who has set the anchor at the height of their own edifice, or their status, or a particular person, fights with everyone at that height. This is why mature resonance is rare in the territory of the ego. The lower the anchor, the more crowded the sky.
The name of the mechanics is coherence. The objection from the first section returns here as a theorem. Coherence comes from a common reference. Between two people who share no absolute there is neither flourishing nor cancellation, only non-relation. For there to be a relation at all, a shared reference clock must come first.
This is also why looking in the same direction is the first among the techniques. Set the direction upward, and the side empties out.
The Frozen-Power Theorem
Luminosity has a slope in time. The elder shines first and fades first. In the natural state, this slope alternates peacefully. The earlier star setting and the later star rising is the normal operation of the sky.
The moment that slope is institutionalized as power, alternation is forbidden. A hierarchy that has become power forbids the natural alternation of luminosity. The one ahead, unable to set, hardens; the one behind, unable to rise, dries out. The light of both is frozen together. The node of a standing wave is its shape. Between two waves fixed facing each other, an eternally dark point forms, and that point does not move until the waves stop.
The freeze has hardened into idiom. A Korean proverb says there is no son who equals his father, and another says there is no younger brother who equals the elder. These are declarations that the order of birth fixes the order of luminosity forever. The doctrinal version is in the Talmud. If the earlier generations were the sons of angels, we are the sons of men; and if they were the sons of men, we are like donkeys. Faced with the suggestion that a later generation might improve on an earlier one, the Gemara asks whether that could possibly be. It is the purest form of the prohibition on alternation.
The antidote is not a swap in the order but a relativizing of the structure. When the shared absolute stands higher than the ranking, hierarchy becomes a signpost. The training hall is like that. The belts have colors, yet white belt and black belt roll at full force, and both grow, because the belt is a map of skill. This side has its idioms too. Xunzi wrote that blue comes from the indigo plant and yet is bluer than indigo. It is a figure for learning surpassing its own raw material, and later ages hardened it into a blessing on the student who surpasses the teacher. Confucius said that those who come after are to be held in awe, and asked how one could know that those to come will not equal the present. It is an answer given a thousand years before the Gemara asked. When the shared absolute stands lower than the ranking, hierarchy becomes a prison, because the belt is then a throne. The hierarchy of the signpost blesses being surpassed; the hierarchy of the prison forbids it.
The Vienna Triangle
A controlled experiment in these techniques was carried out a century ago in Vienna.
Tausk is the specimen of parasitism, the registration the first essay called the dodder’s. He had his own light. “The Influencing Machine” was his. But he hung the registry of that light on Freud’s signature. When the sun turned its head, what went out was the register of his own light. An eclipse becomes night only in a sky with a single source.
Freud is the specimen of extinguishing and avoidance. He refused the analysis, delegated it to a pupil, and then cut even that off. In a letter after the death he wrote that he did not miss the man, that he had regarded him as a threat to the future. A rival disposed of without mourning remains in the territory as an echo. The man who discovered the Oedipus complex played Laius.
The Salomé of the first half is the specimen of chasing a lost light source. She tried to re-procure the lost absolute, the god of her childhood, among great men. An attempt to supply a vertical longing from the horizontal. The discriminants of the first essay have already performed the autopsy on those endings.
And the pair of Freud and Salomé is the demonstration of flourishing together. The same man canceled with Tausk and reinforced with Salomé for decades. Three variables can be named. Salomé was not a party to the contest of succession (a structural separation of domains); the two exchanged each other’s light as a measuring standard; and they looked in the same direction. The same sources, a different arrangement, the opposite result. The outcome of interference is a function of arrangement, not of character.
There is only one door out of this triangle, and its name is already in the genealogy of the first essay. If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill the Buddha. The destruction of the circuit that serves a human sun is the entrance to the sky of stars.
Constellation
Now the three essays fold.
Upward, one pursues. The absolute is to be pursued, not obtained, and the orbit of that non-arrival makes growth rings. Inward, one lights. The seat of the objective sun is vacant, but the light of my own sky is mine to switch on, and that seat is inalienable. Sideways, one aligns. Light is not taken but interferes, so flourishing together is not a kind heart but a technique of phase.
Roots below, the sun above, people beside. Of that diagram, what these three essays have taken up is the above, the inward, and the beside. The work of entangling below, and the business between stars of differing luminosity and time, is not fully written here.
Stars that pursue the same light have nothing to take from one another. They measure distance by each other’s periods, keep watch through each other’s darks, and recognize one another across distances never touched, by nothing but what each has sent out.
