The Door

The word mentor comes from the Odyssey. In an Ithaca whose king had not come home, the old friend of the father who guided the boy Telemachus was named Mentor. But that friend was in fact Athena, who had borrowed a human shape. The goddess taught the boy with a friend’s face, and the boy followed the friend.

So the original of this word is exactly the clause of the first essay. A person is not a light source but a medium. Two Propositions

A book carries knowledge, but it does not grade whether my objection is a good one. Mencius studied Confucius at a distance, but received no correction from him. On the student’s side there are three motions too.

To carry fire from the teacher’s flame to one’s own wick, without seating the teacher in the seat of the sun in one’s own sky. The moment the teacher is seated there, the teacher ceases to be a teacher and becomes a candle.

If the large star’s radiation is too strong, the cloud is evaporated instead of compressed, and it disperses into the large star’s light without gathering into a star of its own. Photoevaporation. If the radiation is too weak, there is no compression. Only when it is right does ignition occur. Carried over into persons, photoevaporation is identification. When a teacher treats the student as an extension of himself, the student cannot gather into a star of her own and disperses into the teacher’s light. What is bad for the student’s growth is not the teacher’s size but identification.

Second, departure. The stars born do not fall into the orbit of the large star that begot them. They spread out into loose groups. Not staying in the shade.

Third, growth rings. When a large star dies it explodes as a supernova and scatters the heavy elements it made inside itself. From that ash the next generation of stars is made. So later stars have a higher metal content than earlier ones. Astronomy divides them into populations: the old, poor stars, and the rich stars made of their ash.
